Mango’s, papayas, pineapples, bananas and cashew nuts! Chickens running around, a toilet with a giant hole under it, a shower that uses rainwater…. Welcome to the Kenyan countryside.

We pick you up from your hotel and gather other visitors as well as you mentaly prepare yourself for this adventure. Soon we will leave hotels, shops and the coastline behind us and drive into the african countryside. After a few kilometers we will leave the tarmac behind us and get into areas where time seems to have been standing still. We pass the sugarcane fields and see children playing outside and mothers walking to fetch water. We go deeper and deeper into the heart of Africa and we see the environment changing, it is becoming hilly and palm trees make way for Mangotrees. We drive into the village of ……. where we have to leave our vehicle behind us. The last stretch to the farm is only reachable by motorbike. Friendly men are already waiting for us with their motorbikes. They hand us a helmet and there we go for the last stretch to the farm.

Mango’s, papayas, pineapples, bananas and cashew nuts! Chickens running around, a toilet with a giant hole under it, a shower that uses rainwater…. Welcome to the Kenyan countryside! From the friendly host we receive a drink and a platter of tropical fruits. We relax under the tree in chairs made out of local wood.

After we have adjusted and tried the local toilet we start our tour. Our host shows us around the farm and tells us all about the different produce that is growing at the farm:  The nuts, fruits and this intriguing red berry that is used in coloring so many products. After a walk through the first part of the farm we take a break because it is always warm here. It is time for a great lunch mainly existing out of farm produce. Every lunch is special because the ingredients are fresh and seasonal. After lunch we continue our walk and hear all about local traditions, the history of the area and how the farm deals with climate change. At the end of the walk we sit down and relax, have a drink and reflect on this great day under the african sky. We have truly seen Africa now! When we are refreshed we hear our motorbikes arriving and we hop on to get back to our hotel while processing everything we have seen and heard today.
